I actually made this out of 5 mm Underlayment. its a bit thicker than the 3mm basswood, but if you buy a 4x8 sheet and can cut it down, the savings are huge. I paid 30 dollars for the sheet at Home depot. the size of the butter is ruffly 12in x 12in. in a single 4x8 sheet you can get ruffly 32, 12inx12in canvases. good luck
