DPI and LPI are treated as equivalent for line density. Always verify on a test grid.
Interval and LPI are inverses
Line interval is the gap between scan lines, so a smaller interval means more lines and a denser engrave. LPI counts the lines directly, so bigger is denser. They move in opposite directions, which is exactly why converting them in your head goes wrong.
Denser is not automatically better
Past the point where your beam spots already overlap, extra lines add heat and time without adding detail. On wood that shows up as scorching and a muddy image; on coated metal it can burn straight through the coating. Matching the density to your spot size beats maximising it.
DPI is a printing unit
DPI comes from printing and is used loosely in laser software. Treat a converted DPI figure as a close equivalent rather than an exact one, and always confirm against a test on the actual material.
