Why engraved QR codes fail to scan
Almost always for one of three reasons. The modules are too small and bleed into each other as the laser cuts, so the scanner can no longer resolve the grid. The quiet zone is missing, because the code was placed hard against a border or the edge of the part. Or the contrast is too low, which is what happens when the engraving and the surface end up too close in tone. The readout catches the first one, every export includes a four-module quiet zone, and the colour controls let you keep the modules clearly darker than the background.
Which error correction level to use
Error correction adds redundant data so a damaged code still reads. Level H recovers from about 30% damage and is the right default for anything engraved, etched or printed on a curved surface, because fill inconsistency and material grain both eat modules. The trade is size: H makes a bigger code for the same content. If you are printing on flat paper, M is usually plenty and gives you a noticeably smaller code.
Keep the content short
Every character you add makes the grid denser, and density is the enemy of engraving. A short link produces a 29 × 29 code, which is comfortable from about 25 mm and still workable down to 15 mm on high-contrast material like acrylic or coated metal. A full contact card can push past 69 × 69, which needs roughly 50 mm before the modules are safe to burn on anything. If a code is coming out too dense, shorten the URL rather than shrinking the artwork.
