Leather Wallet with Initials

LeatherIntermediate~$9 materials~20 min

A slim engraved wallet is a clean, high-perceived-value gift for graduations, groomsmen, and Father’s Day. Initials or a short monogram on genuine or full-grain leather looks custom and orders fast in batches.

Why it sells

Leatherette blanks are cheap and forgiving; real leather commands a premium. Either way the engraving is quick and the item ships flat and light.

Suggested materials

How to make it

  1. 1Choose the blank: leatherette engraves to a crisp light-on-dark mark; genuine leather burns to a rich brown debossed look.
  2. 2Mask the area with transfer tape if you want to reduce smoke staining on light leather.
  3. 3Position the monogram — corner placement reads more premium than dead-center on a wallet.
  4. 4Test on a scrap: leatherette and genuine leather want very different power.
  5. 5Engrave, then peel any masking and wipe residue with a barely-damp cloth.

Pro tips

  • Leatherette gives the most consistent, photogenic result — start there for volume orders.
  • Genuine leather smells and smokes; ventilate well and keep power low to avoid a burnt edge.
  • A small corner monogram scales across dozens of groomsmen gifts without redesign.

Pricing guidance

Leatherette wallets run $4–$9; genuine leather $12–$25. Sell personalized at $18–$28 (leatherette) or $35–$55 (genuine).

FAQ

What’s the difference engraving leatherette vs. real leather?+

Leatherette engraves to a light, crisp contrast mark and is very consistent. Genuine leather debosses to a darker brown and varies by hide — always test the exact piece.

Do I need to mask leather before engraving?+

Masking isn’t required, but transfer tape reduces smoke staining on light-colored leather and keeps the surrounding area clean.
