Personalized Cutting Board

WoodBeginner~$12 materials~25 min

A personalized cutting board is the workhorse of laser gifting — one clean engraving turns a $12 bamboo blank into a $35–$45 keepsake. Names, family-established dates, and short recipe engravings sell year-round and spike hard for Mother’s Day, weddings, and housewarmings.

Why it sells

High perceived value, cheap blanks, and a design that takes two minutes to personalize. It photographs well, which is half the battle on Etsy and Instagram.

How to make it

  1. 1Choose a hardwood or bamboo blank. Bamboo engraves lightest; acacia and maple give richer contrast.
  2. 2Wipe the face with a damp cloth and let it dry — dust and oils cause patchy burns.
  3. 3Set the design in your software, center it, and leave a safe margin off the edges and any juice groove.
  4. 4Run a test on the back or a scrap of the same wood. Bamboo usually wants lower power than maple.
  5. 5Engrave, then wipe with a slightly damp cloth to lift surface soot.
  6. 6Finish with food-safe mineral oil or a board conditioner — it darkens the engraving and protects the wood.

Pro tips

  • Engrave before oiling, never after. Oil in the grain smokes and muddies the mark.
  • Bamboo is inconsistent lot to lot — always test the specific blank you’re selling.
  • Keep text large and simple; fine serif fonts fill with soot and lose legibility on grainy wood.
  • Offer a “no juice groove” flat board for full-face designs and a grooved one for kitchen use.

Pricing guidance

Blanks run $8–$15. A single-name board sells for $30–$45; add $8–$12 for a full-face family design or recipe. One 25-minute engraving is a comfortable 60–75% margin.

FAQ

What laser settings should I use for a bamboo cutting board?+

Start with a moderate-power, moderate-speed engrave and test on the back first. Bamboo marks with less power than maple or acacia — browse dialed-in cutting board settings by machine and material in the library.

Is laser-engraved cutting board food safe?+

The engraving itself is just charred wood. Finish with food-safe mineral oil or a butcher-block conditioner and keep designs off the primary cutting surface if the board will see heavy knife use.

How much can I charge for a personalized cutting board?+

Most makers sell single-name boards for $30–$45 and full-design or recipe boards for $45–$60, against $8–$15 in blank cost.
