I bought a bag of "wood slices" from a hobby store. As they're natural wood, and still have the bark on them, it's easy to see that they're birch. The main problem I had with them was that the growth rings vary in softness, so some spots would scorch, and others would be fine. I turned the power down from 75% to 65%, and got a result I'm happy with. I haven't attempted any cleaning or finishing on this piece.
